2017 Syrah Elephant Mountain
The vineyard site is a striking south slope high above the Yakima Valley floor from 1300 to 1450 feet elevation. The elevation and proximity to the Cascade foothills 30 miles west moderates summer heat and extends the growing season. Planted in 2005, the TC99 clone Syrah vines are mature and deep-rooted. This Syrah ripens later and is inky and intense. Soils consist of a two-foot layer of loess over fractured basalt.
On the nose: Vibrant black cherry, violet, forest floor, dark chocolate, kalamata olive. On the palate: Rich, structured, cocoa and black cherry, savory finish.
Pair with: slow-smoked rib roast, grilled duck breast or grilled/baked balsamic eggplant.
